Let Me In (2010)

THIS IS A REVIEW, NOT A SPOILER!
(If you haven't seen the movie, this won't hurt you)

LET ME IN (2010) is an English version adaptation of the 2004 novel LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, written by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist. It was first adapted to the big screens in 2008, with the same tittle.

While most reviewers here seem to prefer the Swedish version, I honestly prefer the "American" adaptation for a few reasons. I'm considering style, what kind of crowd it wants to attract and time of its release: It is early October, LET ME IN is out just in time for Halloween. It is a horror movie. And as a horror movie, it achieves much more than the Swedish version.

Considering that the book Let the Right One In is a contemporary vampire fiction, it takes elements from Gothic Literature. Both movies involve the same features: terror, isolation, death, darkness, and, last but not least, vampires. However, LET ME IN succeeds by far in many respects when it comes to those elements, and I'll talk about some of them in detail.

TERROR: is usually described as the feeling of dread and anticipation that precedes the horrifying experience. LET ME IN creates terror from its opening scene. You know something bad has happened, you just wait to see what it was. The way the movie starts with its inverted chronology was a great idea and I personally think it works better (for terror) than the linear timeline of the Swedish version.

ISOLATION: the characters in LET ME IN are presented much more isolated and lonely than in LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. In the American version, the boy seems hopeless and unprotected in every way: not only is he bullied at school, he also has a hard time at home. There is a feeling of abandonment (by his father), not a real connection with the mother and unfriendliness from neighbors. In the Swedish version, the boy is pretty close to his mother, even his father is somehow present (apparently, his parents' divorce hasn't affected him) and although the bullies' acts at school are basically the same, the Swedish actors do not convince in cruelty and suffering. When it comes to the girl, both movies portrait her basically in the same way.

CINEMATOGRAPHY: The cinematography of both movies are completely different. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN looks like a Lady Gaga video. Its lighting is bright throughout the entire movie - a fluorescent white light, the kind they use in supermarkets. That doesn't help translating the movie's mood. On the other hand, LET ME IN has a very low light throughout the movie, it definitely increases the story's dark
atmosphere.

There are only two things I could do without in the English version: the use of CGI in a few scenes and its timeline advising cards: "two weeks earlier" was completely unnecessary. It's time for movie makers in America to let the audience understand what happens in a movie on their own.

I also consider LET ME IN more of an adaptation of the Swedish movie than an adaptation of the novel. And it melancholically outshines the first motion picture.

Videoclipe contemporaneo

Isso me diverte.

1) fazem como Madonna: que nao vendeu a alma e possui integridade artistica (fazendo a linha "faco limonada com os limoes que me deram). Ou;

Madonna deixa gravadora escolher single? Oi?

O cara gostou do show de Gaga. A moca eh fraca e nao tem controle do proprio show.

Alerta vermelho
cor do meu sangue
colore meu rosto e sugere aversão
ao cinismo, ao abismo, à dúvida e à inércia

Um brinde ao amor, minha grande subversão

Les langues / Les Langues

The Fame Monster (Complete Review)

Lady Gaga's latest album just leaked. The full eight tracks hit the web yesterday. And although I am still buying the record when it is released, I had to listen to all of its tracks.

So here's my overall opinion: the album sounds more uniform than the previous one (The Fame). There is a musical and sound unit connecting the songs together, the exceptions are Speechless and Telephone (their sound do not fit the whole album).

There's a very particular "industrial" sound. I would call it Industrial Pop. Sounds like some industrial rock bands from the late 70s and 80s. But one can feel a heavy influence from some eurodance tracks from the mid-90s. Again, Gaga invests in vintage. The result is good.

The Fame Monster is NOT as brilliant (brilliance as in free and not worried), immature and fresh as The Fame, but it is a great step for Gaga. We are seeing her taking her first steps as a star and not as a wannabe. And here, we can sense some pressure. Opposed to what she sings, she is not the "free bitch" she wants us to believe.

Now, my song by song review:

Bad Romance: Good song. But it gets even better with the video. Clearly, the success of this song depends on the Gaga-Mania and the hyper produced vodka commercial, I mean, beautibul video more than on the song itself. Love the lyrics. Oh, by the way, Brazilians, don't mistake "Romance" (in English) with "romance" (in Portuguese).

Alejandro: The song is better than the one that leaked earlier this month. As any other white-American flirting with Latin cultures, Gaga is a little confused. She starts the song with an Italian accent, but then sings about Alejandro, Fernando, Roberto (all Hispanics) and Mexico rejoice? Is she taking lessons from Cher? For those who don't know what I am talking about, Cher has a song called Dov'e L'Amore (Italian) but the song has Spanish guitars. Coherence? NOT! Cher and Gaga do not know what this word means. But the song is fun.

Monster: "He ate my heart". We heard Gaga saying that before. But now it is a song. Sounds like the other first two tracks. Cute song. I can see all the twinkies at Pulse dancing to it. By the way, I can't wait to see a grown up Gaga singing to adults and not brainless twinkies. She's gonna be even better.

Speechless: Okay, now it's official. All Gaga's piano songs sound the same. And although this one sounds completely organic, if you're not a fan or an avid listener, "Speechless", "Brown Eyes" and "Again and Again" will sound the same for you.

Dance in the Dark: Sounds unfinished. It also has the same structure as "Show me Love" by t.A.T.u. I guess it is the only "wannabe" of the album, by that, I mean, she wanted to sound and make an impression with this song but failed. It's fake and weak. Gaga is too young and, pardon my French, stupid to sound deep and intelligent.

Telephone: By far, the best track on the album. It sounds like a track from the previous album. It is not industrial at all. Great dance track. I love the way it sounds lika a Beyonce song when she (B) sings. Smart track with terrible rhymes. And I remember when people criticized Madonna for rhyming "I like New York" with " Other cities make me feel like a dork". If that was bad, what will they say about Gaga and Beyonce rhyming "Grand Central Station" with "I'll be dancing"? They clearly left their minds on the dance floor. Love love LOVE this song. Ma-ma-ma-ma telephone (yeah, that's how I spell it).

So Happy I Could Die: It is a blend of Eh-Eh and Starstruck. But better than both. I can imagine some really good remixes for it.

Teeth: Wow. A middle-eastern loop going on and a crazy stompy beat followed by guitars. Great song. Gaga is maturing. Yay! She just needs to lose the attitude and the pre-made lines and stop posing as an artist. Come on! Just like her bubble dress, many of the things Gaga represents were not made by her.

This album sounds more like what Gaga wants us to think she is than the previous one. And before anyone asks "who does this guy think he is to review her songs?" I am a guitarrist and a songwriter. I also research Fashion and do not have the nerve to lie about what I wear (unlike Gaga).

I love the album, and just like The Fame, it will be the most played on my iPod. Twice as any other.

Madonna Celebrates with an Orgy

Gus Braga, Sept. 1st, 2009

An analysis of Madonna's latest song, Celebration

"I guess I just don’t recognize you with your clothes on…"

When I first heard Madonna's latest song "Celebration", I was thrilled. I found it fresh, fun, catchy and the perfect headline track for a compilation: it reminds us all why Madonna's been crowned the Queen of Pop.

But what is she celebrating after all? And how does she celebrate?

After a few hearings and a little more attention payed to the lyrics, I realized that Madonna's track has much more in common with a "Sex in the City" lifestyle than anything else. Single, middle-aged, hot and, sometimes gay. It can't get better than that. Madonna's celebration isn't about dancing after all.

Remember those nights when we were all single, going to nightclubs, trying to hook up? Yeah, this one goes for those who kiss (and do more) on a first date.

After a few glasses of Cosmo, or the good-old O.J. and vodka, you find yourself a little hammered, flirting with a latin hunk who looks familiar (he might be that dude from manhunt or dudesnude, now dressed). Your eyes meet. You think he wants to come over. And if he's drunk or sober, it doesn't matter. You both want it.

You're really into him. Everybody's found themselves a piece of meat. So you invite your hottie to join the party, because anybody else just wouldn't do - "he" is your type.

You two start messing around. Things get hotter and hotter, you're going to lose control (no protection?). "Oh, but he is super hot" you think. "And he has a reputation" (is he really that hung?).

It just drives everybody crazy. He stoop up for his reputation (boy, he's got it). When they see it, they all want to "party" with him too. You get a little jealous, and invite him to go outside, just the two of you.

Then, when you two are finally alone. You whisper in his ears and invitation to the dance of life. You know, the dance routine two grown-ups do when they want to have a baby (if at least one of them has an ovum).

Go for it, Madonna! Once again, you gave us all a new reason to go clubbing.
